HBO’s prestigious fantasy series Game of Thrones is on its way out the door. The final season of the show is set to premiere this coming spring, prompting an ending that has been many years in the making. But, of course, HBO isn’t so excited to let their jewel in the crown die, so to speak. As such, they have been hard at work developing five spin-off stories set in the world of Westeros.
So far, there has only been one of those series that have made it to the greenlight stage, and that’s the show coming from writer Jane Goldman, who will serve as executive producer. The show is currently untitled, but in his blog, author George R.R. Martin has been referring to it as The Long Night, which initially led to confusion as to whether or not it’s called that.

Speaking during a panel with John Hodgeman, Martin shared that the network doesn’t like him calling the show that:
“I’ve been calling it The Long Night because that’s what it’s about. It’s set during a period referred to in the books as The Long Night. HBO has told me, ‘stop calling it The Long Night, because we haven’t titled it yet.’ So the untitled series that may be called The Long Night is set during the Long Night…(laughs)”
Let this be a lesson to you, networks out there. Name your damn shows! As someone who writes about this stuff day in and day out, it gets annoying having to refer to a show by some amorphous description. That being said, given the world we live in, every piece of news out there is considered news, and as something like Avengers 4 has proven, people get a whole lot of joy out of simply speculating about a title of a show.
