Most of us have just been assuming and maybe more so hoping that the sure to be epic eighth and final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones would air sometime in April of 2019. All of sudden that is seeming less likely and we are probably looking at an early summer release date. The difference isn’t huge, but for fans who will have waited almost two years for the conclusion of arguably the greatest television show of all time, adding any more time to the wait… well, it sucks.
Now while none of the following information has been confirmed by the network, a Huffington Post interview with Joe Bauer, a visual effects supervisor on Game of Thrones, points to a mid-2019 release, saying they will be up for the 2020 Emmy Awards. Here is what Bauer had to say.
“In two years we’ll be eligible [The 2020 Emmys] for the Season 8 work, which we’re just beginning now. We’re going to be toiling away on Season 8 until May of 2019, so it’s eight or nine months away”

For Game of Thrones to be eligible for the 2020 Emmys, the series would have to air most of the season’s episodes after May 31, which would make the release a month or more longer than previously thought April. What’s a couple more months right? Well, it’s a couple more months of waiting and while us fans have no choice but to wait, it feels like we’ve been waiting forever.
