We’ve known for some time that the last two seasons of Game of Thrones would be much shorter than the standard 10-episode ones. The first six seasons had done a fantastic job of building this world, and setting all the chess pieces in place, and now what remained were the countless payoffs that audiences had been hungry for all these years.
Some time ago, the showrunners stated that the last two seasons would only consist of 13 episodes in total, and when it was confirmed that Season 7 would be seven episodes long, it took simple arithmetic to figure out that Season 8 would likely only last six episodes. However, nothing is ever fully set in the film industry. The creative process is ever malleable, and in the time between then and now, they could very well have found that they had either more or less story to tell, when all said and done.

Now, EW has confirmed with their sources that yes, Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season will only be made up of six episodes. This means that, when all said and done, this epic high fantasy tale of sex and betrayal will have clocked in at an admirable 73 episodes. In the grand tradition of shows like Breaking Bad, this is one that will have ended on its own terms, and one that will have told a complete story from beginning to end.
While this certainly seems like good news for those wanting closure, this may spell bittersweetness for those who loved the more meditative pacing of the first few seasons. With each passing year, the deaths have started coming swifter, and the events more rapidfire. Some attribute that to them blowing past the source material, but that may also just be the natural consequence of coming to the end of a long drawn out story.
