I’ll guess you have probably already seen the trailer for Game of Thrones Season 8, the finale of probably the biggest TV show of all time? If not, feel free to watch it a few more times above, I have.
As we also like to do with big movie trailers is break them down and work out exactly what we are seeing. We can then guess, or speculate as to some of the events that may happen in the movie. The size and stature of Game of Thrones means this is the first time we have done so for a TV trailer, and it’s as exciting as any movie.

So……. If you are happy with the glimpses you have been given in the trailer and don’t want to go a bit deeper down the rabbit hole, then back out now. This may get very slightly SPOILERY and we may notice something you hadn’t yet considered. Best check out another of our stories if you are overly worried.

Still with me? Excellent, shall we begin?
How Much Do We See Here?
Now, I could be wrong, so feel free to disagree, but I have a feeling we are seeing scenes here from mostly the first two episodes and some small little quick shots of maybe three or four. So I believe we know what is going to happen, roughly in those first few episodes. Most of the trailer takes place in Winterfell, we already know the first episode sees Jon, Dany and her armies arriving in Winterfell with the dragons.
We know that they are in Winterfell to mount a defense against the army of the dead. This battle is glimpsed only a few times, but we can see more of the group preparing for this battle in the trailer. We already can guess that based on various spy reports and set photo leaks, that this big massive battle they are promoting will happen at Winterfell.
Therefore we can guess that the first few episodes feature the arrival of Dany and co to Winterfell, some likely revelations about Jon and drama around this. We also can guess that this is followed by the preparations for the big battle which I’d guess is Episode 3 and will take up the entire duration of the episode. and we can see that Cersei is currently having the Golden Company ferried over to Westeros by Euron Greyjoy and feeling quite happy about that while her brothers and everyone else deals with a more pressing threat.
What happens after that, well, who knows? I don’t think we see much of Episode 4, if at all, and I am sure none of that footage is from Episodes 5 or 6.
The Golden Company
Well, as you can see from the screenshot I took above, Euron Greyjoy is bringing the Golden Company across to Westeros just as Cersei commanded him to do. We can also perhaps guess that the captain/leader/golden-haired guy at the front with his back to us, may well be Harry Strickland. Strickland is a character in the books, which feature the Golden Company far more than the show has. So far Strickland hasn’t been even mentioned in Game of Thrones, so they may well not call this character by that name, but I feel like that’s where they are going.
Tormund Lives!!!!
Yes, folks. I have no idea if you caught the shot, but here it is a bit more clearly. We can see that Tormund the bear f****r and Beric Dondarrion did indeed survive the attack on the wall by the Night King and his undead dragon Viserion. I can’t quite work out who else is with them, but it could be Dolores Edd? Was there ever any doubt Tormund wasn’t going out like a punk?
Jon Stark/Aegon Targaryen Dragon Rider?
They’ve been teasing this for 8 seasons now. Surely now that Jon realizes he is, in fact, Aegon Targaryen, he and Dany, his lover and his aunt (hey, it’s Game of Thrones) are going to take one dragon each and kick some serious ass? It certainly does look it from these images and I’ll even go one better and say this would be from before that giant battle, maybe even a bit of practice before the big event? Of course, there’s always an argument that this scene comes later, after the battle of Winterfell, but I have a feeling that battle isn’t going to go well for our heroes. It’s worth remembering that even as I predicted back in season 7, Viserion was the one to die and be remade as a wight, Dany has Drogon and that leaves Rhaegal. Rhaegal was named after Rhaegar Targaryen, Jon’s biological father.
The Rest
I’ll also round up a few other cool little tasty morsels from this trailer. Arya seems overly confident of facing the dead when she talks about the many faces of death, but prior to that, we see a very scared Arya fleeing through what I assume are the tunnels under Winterfell. It’s pretty obvious which of these scenes comes first?
We know Jaime Lannister has indeed kept his word and joined the others in the North for the big battle, where he is sure to be reunited with Brienne of Tarth and his brother Tyrion. No sign of Bronn anywhere in this trailer I could spot, but you’d have to assume he doesn’t miss out the season staying back in King’s Landing, food for thought? We also know both Jerome Flynn and Lena Heady do not work together and have it in their contracts to not appear in a scene together (old relationship, didn’t end well we guess), so it really would make sense for Bronn to go North with Jaime?
I will also guess that Bran’s voiceover about coming home where you belong to ‘someone’ is in fact Jon. I’ll also guess this is the same scene where Bran tells Jon about his true lineage and destiny, and I think that will be episode 1.
There may be a few more things I have missed, but again, I really do think this is mostly scenes from the first 2 episodes only. However, let us know if you spotted anything you think we missed. My reaction to this trailer and how I envision those first few episodes going is that I really can’t see how they can possibly wrap up all of this in only 6 episodes. Thus my only worry is that in order to get to the end as spectacularly as possible, some of the storylines may not get a satisfying conclusion and instead they’ll just kill off everyone until there are only a few characters left. Genuinely hope those fears are unfounded.
