In my humble opinion, Bryan Cogman was the best writer working on Game of Thrones. Cogman was also assistant to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and (again in my opinion) should have been allowed to complete the show more fully by Benioff and Weiss after they clearly had had enough of Westeros. However, we are where we are and the brightest spot of Game of Thrones final season was definitely the second episode titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” Most fans consider this episode to be most in line with the rest of the show’s tone and guess who wrote that episode? Yeah, it was Cogman.
Now Variety is reporting that Cogman has signed on as a consultant to Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV show, which we know will cover events in Tolkien’s mythical Second Age of Middle-Earth. Cogman will be working alongside the writing team of JD Payne and Patrick McKay, who were announced to be developing the series for Amazon back in July.
The world of Tolkien is really very different from that of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world and yet ALL fantasy writers are inspired by Tolkien in some ways, something Martin has discussed extensively himself. It’s also worth noting that some of the material that could be covered as part of Middle-Earth’s Second Age is probably a little closer to Martin’s work than The Lord of the Rings story.

We, of course, don’t know exactly what is being covered in this new TV show from Amazon, but my personal hope is for it to cover the period when Sauron destroyed Numenor from inside through corruption and cunning. For my reasoning and some ideas of what might be covered in this new show, please check out the related section above.
I am certainly excited to see what Amazon can deliver, and I’m very happy that Bryan Cogman is on board even just as a consultant to the show. Though I kinda do wish that he wasn’t available because he was still writing the final season for Game of Thrones, which wrapped up far too sharply for this fan.
