Sony announced they have a Ghostbusters 4 in the works at CinemaCon. Whilst there were no details given, nor talent attached, there will be a sequel coming to Ghostbusters: Afterlife. As reported by Deadline who were in attendance.
The studio announced today at CinemaCon in a closing sizzle reel that a fifth movie in the series is in the works. No talent attachments were revealed.
I’m not sure I’d agree with the trade in this being the fifth movie in the franchise. Does Ghostbusters (2016) count? Not to me. However Afterlife definitely feels like Ghostbusters 3, ergo a sequel to that movie is essentially Ghostbusters 4.
Now when it comes to Afterlife we had quite a divided reaction. There were those who loved and it and those who hated it. I personally found myself somewhere in the middle. I saw it with my kids and it was an okay ‘switch your brain off’ kinda kids movie. But look beyond the surface, as many GB fans did and there’s not much there outside of nostalgia.

In fact Afterlife relied so heavily on nostalgia from the first movie that I half expect Sony to just bring back Vigo somehow for this sequel (the villain from Ghostbusters 2). There’s not much originality in Afterlife and since this is from Sony I hold out no hope for that in a sequel, unless they get lucky. Who you gonna call? For me, anyone but Sony but perhaps you feel differently?
