Star Ewan McGregor was scared of Darth Vader when they met for the first time in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Though it seems crazy to think about it now, McGregor has never appeared in a scene with a suited Darth Vader. Sure, Anakin had become ‘Darth Vader’ when the pair last faced one another in Sith. However it was only after that conflict that Vader ended up in his iconic and menacing suit. As McGregor tells Total Film Magazine (via Games Radar), he was genuinely scared when he first saw Vader coming towards him on set.
“I’ve never met Darth Vader,” he tells Total Film in the new issue of the magazine, which features Obi-Wan Kenobi on the cover. “I had rehearsed the scene with Vader, but not with the helmet on or anything like that. When we came to do the scene, when they shouted ‘action’, he had to come from behind me. I turned around, and fucking Darth Vader was coming at me. It was like I was six again. I’d never acted into Vader’s helmet. I’d never looked him in the eye.”
“It scared the shit out of me,” he chuckles. “I’m not joking. It gave me a proper jolt of absolute fear. I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s not acting. That’s real. I’m really, truly frightened right now.’ And the same thing would happen with the Stormtroopers. I’d worked with Clone troopers before, but so many of them were CGI. I never worked with Stormtroopers, and, again, I was like seven years old again. Because when you’re actually faced with a Stormtrooper, with a blaster, it’s like: ‘Fucking hell.’

Apologies for the language if you are sensitive, but I don’t fudge swear words when they are quotes. Anyhoo, it must have been so cool for McGregor. I imagine when he first signed up to play Obi-Wan he probably thought he’d get to do scenes with Darth Vader in the future. I can just imagine being an actor and having to act fighting Darth Vader, it wouldn’t take much acting would it. That’s a scary sight when the suit is being worn by some super tall actor.
