According to the latest report by Deadline, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel casts both Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani. The sequel has been in development for some time after the success of Afterlife. Currently we have no title, but we do know a few details. For a start Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon will return as the leads. Plus we know that events will move back to NYC and that famous firehouse.

Of course, now we know Oswalt and Nanjiani are in for whatever ghostly goings on the sequel will provide. In addition Deadline reports that James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind have both joined the cast as well.

Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, comedian James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind have joined the cast of the live-action sequel to Sony Pictures’ hit film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Gil Kenan is directing, and the previous pic’s cast including Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon will return as the setting shifts to the original films’ New York City and firehouse.

Though I’ve heard no solid rumors yet, I do expect at least one member of the OG team to return and that’s Ernie Hudson. The close of Afterlife made it seems like Winston is the one controlling the keys to the castle as it were. However Winston is not a tech guy, so one wonders if Carrie’s Spengler descendant will be recruited to fill in the role her grandfather had? I could see Kumail and Patton ended up as part of a new team led by Rudd.

I’d love to see Ray show up, but I cannot see Venkman return. It was a huge surprise when Bill Murray agreed to be in Afterlife. As for excitement levels, mine are low. I didn’t hate Afterlife, but I also didn’t see anything to make me want to see more of it. My kids did like Afterlife though, so perhaps I’ll be dragged to theaters to see this sequel anyway?

For now this unnamed sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife is schedule for a December 2023 release, which isn’t long. However, not to worry, it’s Sony, they never make cheap rushed out rubbish, so we can all sleep safely in that knowledge.
