Hollywood really can make a movie out of anything, can’t they? For some time, we’ve known that Netflix has had the rights to the edutainment computer game. Back around this time last year, we knew that Netflix would be making 22 22-minute episodes of the show in animated form. On board to star as Carmen Sandiego herself was Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez.
Now, things have changed…kind of. In addition to the animated series (at least for now it sounds like it’ll be in addition to the series), they are now turning this into a live-action feature for the streaming service. Rodriguez will be playing the character in live-action form, and will also be producing the film through her I Can I Will productions.
The Carmen Sandiego brand first hit in the ’90s, and most notably hit TV in ’94 in animated form. From there, it even turned into a live-action game show, where is where I mostly know it from (and its awesome theme song). As of right now, there is no writer or director attached to this upcoming film, but it’s said to be a standalone adventure that will embrace the original property.
Next year, publisher and learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will be releasing a new line of books to be released in tandem with the new animated series. Should the live-action film be released shortly thereafter, it’ll be perfectly-timed.
