Gladiator 2 To Take Place Roughly 25 To 30 Years After Original

Oh, Gladiator 2. You’ve been on quite a journey. For decades, ever since the original came out, there have been rumors and speculation surrounding a sequel to the Russell Crowe-starring Oscar-winning flick. But they were stupid bits of speculation and rumors, involving Maximus going on a journey through hell after dying in that first movie. Except…they weren’t rumors. Oh, no, as Ridley Scott and the attached writer at the time confirmed, they were all too real at one point.

Now, it’s all these years later, and while we still have a sequel on the way, it looks to be a more traditional follow-up less in the vein of some old mythological tale (which is what that other idea sounded like). Scott is still working on the idea along with writer Peter Craig, and when asked about its status, producer Laurie MacDonald said the following to Hey U Guys:

“We’re working with Ridley, and that’s one we wouldn’t touch unless we felt we had a way to do it that’s legitimate, so we’re working with an amazing writer, as well, Peter Craig.”

And as far as the setting for the film, producer Walter Parkes added, “It picks up the story 30 years later, 25 years later.”

Of course, nothing in Hollywood is a sure thing. It’s very possible this could all fall through in about five seconds. Projects always seem to be on a brink of collapse…until they’re not. At the very least I’m interested to see how they’ll tackle the story, which, when we last heard, revolves around Commodus’ nephew Lucius, and how his life was changed greatly after being saved by Maximus.

I’ll be keeping my eye on this one…
