Will Smith’s King Richard Secures Director of Monsters and Men

Reinaldo Marcus Green is on board to direct Warner Bros.’ King Richard, which centers on the father of tennis champs Venus and Serena Williams and stars Will Smith as their father. Suicide Squad’s Will Smith will star as Richard Williams, the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams.

Director Reinaldo Marcus Green signed on to the project Thursday. Warner Bros followed with an announcement that King Richard has a release date. Film-goers can look forward to seeing King Richard can expect it to arrive in theaters the day before Thanksgiving in 2020. A move that makes me think Warner Bros are hoping to catch a lot of cash from vacationers and families enjoying Holiday outings at the cinema.

Scripting duties were handled by Zach Baylin. The story will chronicle how one father groomed his daughters to be the two of the top tennis players on earth. Together Venus and Serena Williams have won 14 Grand Slam doubles championships.  King Richard will be executive produced by Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

King Richard’s director Reinaldo Marcus Green premiered his debut film Monsters and Men at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. It was awarded the special jury prize for outstanding first feature. In addition, he directed three episodes for streaming giant Netflix’s upcoming series Top Boy. It certainly sounds like Green knows how to handle drama. I for one am looking forward to the first trailer. But it’s probably because Smith was the star of one of my favorite 90s series; The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. To this day I am still holding out hope that it will one day be acquired for Netflix. Or maybe one day it’ll get the Full House treatment and we’ll get The Fresher Prince of Bel Air. Ha. One can hope.
