A God of War TV show coming to Amazon announces Sony during an investor presentation this week (as per ComicBook). Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan responded to a question and confirmed the plans for the show. In addition to the God of War adaptation, Ryan also confirmed there are plans for more shows such as a live-action Horizon Zero Dawn series.
According to a previous report from Deadline, The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby will be helming the series. Another name tipped to be involved is Rafe Judkins, who is currently showrunner for Amazon’s The Wheel of Time show. One assumes Judkins will remain on Wheel of Time, so perhaps more of an exec producer type role?
Normally when something is reported by a trade like Deadline, we know it’s legit. However now we can put any speculation to bed following the comments from Jim Ryan this week.
God of War is just the latest in a series of moves which see’s Sony’s most popular gaming properties adapted into movies and streaming shows. Uncharted starring Tom Holland was the first of these adaptations to hit the big screen and there are others in the pipeline including The Last of Us, which recently finished filming for its debut season.
However perhaps of all the adaptations Sony could make, God of War seems the trickiest to pull off. How would you really revolve a show around Kratos and yet still keep that crazy rage induced God-slaying familiarity. I can imagine this being a fairly heavy budget show. As always, with a greater budget comes a greater expectation of success. The games have been very popular, but will a show be as welcomed by the fan base? I guess we shall have to wait and see for now.
So far we have no timeline for when we might expect to hear more about the God of War TV show. If there is news, we’ll be sure to share it as we come across it.
