With the awards season campaign in full gear, one of the biggest movies in December with Godzilla Minus One, earned “Best Use of Visual Effects” from the Chicago Film Critics Association.

This is the Japanese film version from Toho International, not to be confused with the Americanized Godzilla movies or the current Apple TV+ series Monarch: The Legacy of Monsters.

Also, the film was nominated for “Best Foreign Language Film” by the Critics Choice Awards.

Godzilla Minus One opened with $11 million on its opening weekend on December 1st and has strong ticket sales due to word-of-mouth. Since its domestic opening, it has garnered more than $28 million to date, with a worldwide haul of more than $58 million.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has a high Rotten Tomatoes score of 85 percent and an “A” from audiences with Cinemascore.

The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Juranosuke Sasaki. Music is by Naoki Soto.

Godzilla Minus One follows post-war Japan, where they face a new threat from the seas with Godzilla. With a disarmed nation, civilians must uncover a way to prevent Godzilla from coming ashore to destroy their beloved city of Tokyo.

This is the first domestic Japanese Godzilla film since Shin Godzilla in 2016. It is written and directed by TOHO Studios’ Takashi Yamazaki, which was shot on location and soundstages in Japan from March-June 2022.

Godzilla Minus One is out nationwide today in participating premium large-format theaters.
