Gremlins is another one of those franchises that hasn’t quite died yet. Sure, there hasn’t been anything related to the property for a good while, but a sequel has been in development for a long time, with Chris Columbus apparently having finished a script for a third film as recently as 2017. And yet, nothing has come of it yet. At least not for the past several years. Until now.
Now, WarnerMedia has announced that a new animated comedy series is on the way entitled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. This will be a 10-episode, 30-minute show that takes place prior to the events in the original Gremlins. In fact, quite some time before the original.
Here’s the synopsis for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai:
“In the animated television adaptation, we travel back to 1920s Shanghai to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”
This new show will be produced by Amblin Television alongside Warner Bros. Animation. The series will be written by Tze Chun and executive produced by Animaniacs’ Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Sam Register.
