Not many expected the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie to hit the mainstream as it did. Sure, Marvel Studios clearly had some faith in the flick — otherwise it would have never been made — but none of us fans had any real reason to assume it would be any good. For starters, it was based on a comic book that virtually no one had read (on a side note, if you’re one of the people who claim to have read it, you’re a liar), and as such, it was already doomed to face an uphill battle, due to the mainstream not having a familiar name to latch onto.
While Guardians of the Galaxy managed to live up to its epic name with fun visuals and space-hopping action, it delivered on a very important element: comedy. Oftentimes, when thinking of space opera, comedy isn’t the first thing to come to mind. Sure, these stories may have elements of comedy to them, but with Guardians of the Galaxy, comedy was as much a part of its DNA as space action.
Knowing this, and going into the sequel, fans now know to expect some laughs and solid heart from this sequel. But who can we expect to be the funniest? In a Q&A on Facebook, director James Gunn revealed that to be Dave Bautista’s Drax character, who was also a runaway hit in the first film. When asked what the funniest thing Bautista did on set, he stated:
“Everything is funny. He’s the funniest character in Vol 2. Bradley Cooper just saw the movie and talked about how he’s like Zack Galifinakis in The Hangover (in that he kills every line he has).â€
Indeed, Drax’s inability to understand figurative language makes him a uniquely hilarious figure, and Bautista’s dry and genuine delivery made his character very memorable. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it seems like things are being scaled up quite a bit, and with it, we can only expect the comedy will get the same treatment as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
