Things almost could not have turned out better for both Marvel Studios and James Gunn. Yes, there was a bit of a thing last year when Gunn was briefly fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but now with the way Avengers: Endgame ended, it’s clear that this threequel will have an amazing adventure in store with the crew of galactic misfits (and Gunn getting to direct The Suicide Squad doesn’t hurt either).

But when is this movie expected to get started? Gunn recently stated that he was in pre-production for The Suicide Squad…so what does that mean for his Marvel movie? Well, it looks like a 2020 shoot is planned for it, which seems to hint at a 2019 shoot for The Suicide Squad (though that isn’t confirmed). It’s quite the juggling act Gunn has in store for him, but it’s not impossible.

The Suicide Squad is set for a late 2022 release date, so with that in mind, I can see him shooting the movie, then jumping into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to completion before jumping in and finishing reshoots and postproduction on The Suicide Squad. Ironically enough, it would seem to imply a 2021 release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Again, that specific schedule is all speculation, but based on what we know so far, it doesn’t seem too unlikely. What do you think of Guardians 3 finally getting in front of cameras next year?
