Since 1978, Michael Myers has frightened his fans and moviegoers alike for decades. Sometimes the frights came from his surprise attacks or those iconic scenes of him in the background stalking his prey. Other times, he’s been downright vicious and brutal with horrific kills. In all cases, the Halloween film franchise has worn the R-rated badge with honor, proudly saying to the public “Yes, there will be blood.”
Lately, there has been the occurrence of horror movies garnering PG-13 ratings in order to drive up their box office gross. While there are horror films that can succeed, both critically and financially, with the PG-13 rating, such as Insidious, Happy Death Day and A Quiet Place, certain legends like Freddy, Jason, Jigsaw and Michael have historically been for the “Under 17 Requires Accompanying Parent Or Adult Guardian” crew. To give these horror icons a lighter rating would come off as a “lightening up” or “censoring” of the character and may turn off its faithful fan base.

Well, if there were any fears of the upcoming Halloween to suffer any sort of PG-13 “censoring,” co-producer of the film Ryan Turek stuck a knife through all of that speculation with one tweet.
Rated R for horror violence and bloody images, language, brief drug use and nudity. #HalloweenMovie

Good to see that Michael will be up to his usual R-rated standards. Another piece of evidence, along with the involvement of Jamie Lee Curtis, John Carpenter, and the original Michael himself Nick Castle, showing that it seems filmmakers Danny McBride and David Gordon Green are staying true to the essence of The Shape.
Halloween hits theaters October 19th.
