When you think of Michael Myers, chances are a cat isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. With his overbearing physique and the large butcher knife, something closer to a bear or tank is likely what you think of. But that isn’t necessarily the approach they’re going for this film.
As we previously reported, the original Michael Myers actor, Nick Castle, is returning to wear the mask in the upcoming Halloween sequel, but he won’t be the only one doing so. Director David Gordon Green also hired newcomer James Jude Courtney. The idea seems to be to groom him to carry on the name for future films. In an interview with Halloween Daily News, Courtney discussed the unexpected inspiration for Micheal Myers’ (aka “The Shape”) movements.
“David called me actually prior to rehearsal, and we talked about the character and we talked about movement. He said, ‘Look, I really see a certain – yes, The Shape moves a certain way and Nick Castle was the one that created that iconic sort of presence, but – I have this idea that there’s a certain cat-like quality to the efficiency and movement.’
I think cats are the most perfect hunting, killing machines on the planet. And the beauty of it is we don’t judge a cat for what a cat does. A cat does what a cat does because that’s a cat. So I sort of carried that movement and the non-judgmental approach to the way I moved as The Shape, which I learned from my cat Parcival. He’s a little Grail Knight. He’s a badass.”
That’s right. You see that fluffy furball you let roam around your house? He’s a killer, with several sets of knives, sharp teeth, and the tendency to corner and play with its prey. Make no mistake, your cat would Michael Myers you the first chance it got.
In all seriousness, though, this is an interesting thing to hear, and I like hearing how much work and thought they put into the movement of such an iconic character. Hopefully, it goes a long way to make him all the more enduring for the future.
