Halloween Predicted To Scare Up $65 Million In Opening Weekend

This coming weekend is a big one for the Halloween franchise. Sure, it’s had more sequels than we can count released since the 1978 original sliced its way into theaters, but this film, aptly named Halloween, will ignore every sequel that’s hit since and work as a true continuation of the Halloween mythos. Needless to say, they are relying heavily on audience expectations, and that seems to be key in its box office predictions.

According to a new report from Variety, the upcoming slasher pic is expected to get a massive $57 million to $65 million opening. That’s a pretty wide range for a film, but both are still on the high end for horror films. Most recently, The Nun destroyed all expectations with its $53 million opening — the highest in the successful The Conjuring franchise — and even the low-end predictions have it beating that film.

One similar film that has it beat by a long shot is IT, which took in $123 million in its opening weekend, but let’s be real, that one was an anomaly. However, with Halloween already trending heavily towards the positive by critics (it currently has an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes — our Fox Troilo gave it an A), there seems to be a good chance this film could surprise audiences as well, and by extension, the box office.

Even better is the fact that Halloween only has a price tag of $10 million, meaning that it’ll have made it budget roughly six times over once the film hits, and probably recouped its total costs a few times over. Assuming all goes to plan, this looks to be a highly profitable film to Blumhouse and Miramax, the former of which has made its name on turning huge profits on low-budget, high-concept ideas.
