Halloween Producers Talk About Their Plans For A Sequel

Halloween has been doing really well at the box office this past weekend, the movie has already generated over $78 million and even broken a few records for this time of year. In addition to positive reception from fans, reviews are generally positive for the movie dubbed as a direct sequel to the 1978 classic of the same name.

With a modest budget, as is the norm for movie producer Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, the movie looks set to make a sizeable profit. With profit comes, of course, talk of a sequel and Jason Blum along with producer Ryan Turek spoke with The Wrap about their sequel plans so far. Whilst there is nothing greenlit as yet, it’s certainly something they are thinking seriously about. However, everyone has to be on the same page before they will move ahead with any sequel plans.

Jason Blum:

“It’s hard to make a great movie, period, and I always say, make a great movie first and we’ll figure out a franchise after. Of course we would want to make a sequel, in fact, we’re dying to make a sequel, but we’re guests in Malek Akkad’s house so there are a lot of people that have to be in the same mindset as us. Nothing’s been set in stone, but we’re certainly going to try.”

Ryan Turek:

“Of course I would like to make another one, but Jason always told me, focus on the one movie and then we’ll talk about a sequel after. We would need to have a great story to tell, it has to feel relevant, it has to be scary, it has to have meaning.”

Whilst the current movie is now Blumhouse record opening along with the top opening of any Halloween film to date, it did not quite manage to attain the record opening for October as that honor goes to Venom.

However, with this level of success, there is still risk in a sequel. We have had many, many sequels of varying quality made from this franchise already and I am sure that many of these filmmakers set out to make a good sequel to what had come before. It wouldn’t take much of a downturn to once again turn off audiences and face the same problems that plagued the original sequels.

With that in mind taking their time and making sure they have a good story to tell should be priority number one. If they continue to follow the Blumhouse budget limits, there’s no reason why they cannot keep making profitable and interesting Halloween movies.
