Hamilton Harris on Revisiting and the Aftermath with The Kids Documentary | Tribeca 2021 [Exclusive Interview]

The Kids - Hamilton Harris

In 1995, the narrative film Kids from Larry Clark shook that cinematic world about the life of teens as they travel around New York City skating, drinking, smoking, and deflowering virgins. The film launched the careers of Chloe Sevigny and Rosario Dawson into fame. Not to mention, the movie used several real teens off the streets as their characters, including Hamilton Harris.

For these real teens, stardom didn’t travel very far for many of them. As reality sank in, these teens were deprived of their stardom, fame, and money. Most of these teens would return back to their normal lives and a couple tries to pursue Hollywood only to meet an end.

One of those former teens portrayed in the movie, Hamilton Harris, picked up the camera and tracked down a few of the street teens from the movie. In intimate interviews, they talked about each other and their experiences with the film Kids. Also, the documentary looks into the lives of two of the teens who sought to capitalize on the fame of the film and got nowhere.

Here’s the official synopsis of The Kids:

In the early 1990s, before New York City’s mass gentrification, a group of disparate youth ventured outside their broken homes into the city’s brutal streets. United by skateboarding, they cultivated a family and built a unique lifestyle that ultimately inspired Larry Clark’s 1995 groundbreaking film, Kids. The crew became overnight commodities, thrust into the mainstream spotlight. Left adrift under the bright lights, some discovered transcendent lives and careers—while others, abandoned and unequipped to handle fame, suffered fatal consequences.
