Prime Video Releases First-Look Images From “Bloodaxe,” the New Norse Saga From “Vikings” Creator Michael Hirst

Prime Video on Monday released first-look images from “Bloodaxe,” a new historical drama from Michael Hirst, creator of “Vikings,” and Horatio Hirst. The images give viewers an early look at the series, which follows one of the most famous raiders of the Norse world.

All eight episodes of Season One will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. Prime Video has not yet given a premiere date. The streamer had already ordered a second season, which is now filming in Ireland.

The first season follows Erik Bloodaxe, played by Xavier Molyneux, and his wife Gunnhild, known as the Mother of Kings, played by Jessica Madsen. Erik and Gunnhild are known from the Norse sagas, which picture them as a ruthless pair at the center of the fight for power in 10th-century Norway. In the series, the couple battles for the Norwegian throne as fierce rivals, while shifting loyalties and bloody betrayals tear the country apart.

Prime Video says the conflict grows beyond Norway’s borders. As war approaches, the ruthless kings of other Scandinavian countries are drawn in, along with a powerful English ruler. The streamer describes the result as a “thundering, cataclysmic, compelling and utterly magical new Norse Saga.”

Alongside Molyneux and Madsen, the cast includes Karlis Arnolds Avots, Levi Miller, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen.

For Michael Hirst, the project returns to the territory that made “Vikings” a global hit. That series followed the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons over six seasons. Hirst is also known for writing the film “Elizabeth” and creating “The Tudors.” On “Bloodaxe,” he works with Horatio Hirst. The two serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers.

Other executive producers are Morgan O’Sullivan through his O’Sullivan Productions label, Steve Stark through his Toluca Pictures label, Arturo Interian, John Weber and Sheila Hockin. O’Sullivan and Stark also worked with Hirst on “Vikings,” which was filmed in Ireland. “Bloodaxe” is continuing that tradition with its second season.

With a second season already being filmed before the first has premiered, Prime Video is making a clear bet that audiences still want sweeping, blood-soaked Viking stories.
