Hang On, Fast & Furious 10 Could Be Divided Into Two Parts?

The Fast & Furious franchise has already lasted a hell of a lot longer than it had any real right to. For the first three movies, it was barely above a passable mid-budget action flick. I mean, they weren’t terrible (save, for Tokyo Drift, which was terrible), but I wouldn’t have called them a harbinger of the juggernaut it would become over a decade later. Now, we have the ninth entry, F9: The Fast Saga ready to hit theaters this year, and if previous comments are any indication, we have one movie left before the saga ends.

At least, that’s what it seemed to be at face value. Now, in the midst of marketing for F9: The Fast Saga, Vin Diesel seems to be hinting at something different. Speaking with Total Film, the actor revealed a weird-ass tidbit of what’s to come, but he did so in the guise of talking about spinoffs.

“I started planning for Fast 10 before we started filming Fast 9. Very much so,” Diesel told the outlet. “The universe is so robust and so rich with talent and rich with story that, on one level, it’s totally feasible to have spinoffs, and I think that’s something that is inevitable. Universal deserves it because of how much they’ve invested in this little saga, and it’d be good to give back to Universal. And for the fans, should Fast 10 parts one and two be the conclusion, it would be nice for this world to continue for generations to come.”

Okay, so on one level, Dominic Toretto himself seems keen to leave Universal with a potential legacy to exploit — aka spinoff fodder, which makes a lot of sense. What’s really eyecatching is this seeming strategy pulled straight from the early 2010s. No longer will Fast 10 be the final in the mainline franchise, but it will potentially be two parts of the final chapter in the mainline franchise.

All right, then. I mean, I’m not going to talk crap about it, but it just seems supremely odd since these movies don’t necessarily feel like they’re building to anything. This isn’t a franchise headed toward a clash against a tyrannical government, a dark lord, or giant purple alien. So, with that in mind, I can only imagine that F9 will be used to really set the groundwork for what’s to come.

At least that’s my expectation.
