Happy Death Day 2U: Trailer 2 Hits And Brings With It Doubt That This Sequel Can Work

When the first trailer hit for Happy Death Day 2U hit, I was intrigued having never even heard of Happy Death Day, the original movie that spawned this sequel. After being recommended the movie by colleagues here at LRM, I rented the original to watch my wife and we were both suitably entertained. It was a fun, if not completely unique idea for a slasher movie.

It served to feel like a mash-up of Groundhog Day and Scream and whilst that might not seem like it would work, I felt it did. However, having seen the latest trailer above I must admit to having my doubts about whether a sequel will work just as well. I had kinda hoped that the sequel would revolve around the events of another day in the life of lead character Tree. The first movie, whilst I will try not to spoil, ended with Tree waking up on a different day where the events of her last relived day seemed to have become fixed.

Now it seems, looking at the new trailer, that Tree, in fact, relives the same old day over again, but this time has to save not only herself, but her friends. I have several problems with this approach.

By doing this the writers basically reset all the characters from the first movie other than Tree and if you have seen the original you will know that means Tree having to once again develop a relationship with some of the other characters. Not to mention that the killer was revealed and stopped in that first movie.

The choice here means that they are basically making almost the same movie with a few different twists and turns, but how that will work with all the events of the first movie still having to happen is anyone’s guess. For me, it presents a problem they could have easily eliminated by having the sequel occur a day later.

Now maybe I am wrong, but most of the shots shown in this trailer do seem to point towards this being the same day. Maybe they found a fun way to make it work and maybe they didn’t? Fact remains that it removes much of the anticipation I had for this movie and I’m now likely to wait for a rental again further down the line.

What do you think of the new trailer for Happy Death Day 2U, do you share my concerns or do you not care as long as it’s as fun as the first movie? Sound off in the comments below.
