Harrison Ford Defends The Marvel Cinematic Universe From Criticism

If adventure has a name, Harrison Ford likely has something to do with it. The legendary star who became a global icon as Indiana Jones in the ’80s is the latest talent joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for next year’s Captain America: Brave New World. Even at 82, Ford does not view the MCU as simply a paycheck job.

In an interview with GQ promoting the second season of Shrinking on AppleTV+, Ford defends the MCU as the kind of escapist entertainment he helped to popularize during his prime.

“I mean, this is the Marvel universe and I’m just there on a weekend pass. I’m a sailor new to this town. I understand the appeal of other kinds of films besides the kind we made in the ’80s and ’90s. I don’t have anything general to say about it. It’s the condition our condition is in, and things change and morph and go on. We’re silly if we sit around regretting the change and don’t participate. I’m participating in a new part of the business that, for me at least, I think is really producing some good experiences for an audience. I enjoy that.”

Not only did Ford treat the MCU like a badge of honor, but he also pushed back against the franchise critiques of cinematic auteurs Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. Both directors slammed the MCU for ruining the aura of the modern-day movie star. Ford, however, does not share those beliefs.

“Oh, I think it’s rubbish. I don’t think the question is whether or not there are any movie stars. There’s wonderful actors coming up every day. Whether or not they become movie stars is really not the point. If movies need stars, they will find them. I’ve never f—ing understood being a movie star. I’m an actor. I tell stories. I’m part of a group of people who work together, collaborate on telling stories. I’m an assistant storyteller. That’s what I am.”

Outside his popular roles, Ford has enjoyed working with critically acclaimed filmmakers over the years including Peter Weir in Witness and Mike Nichols in Working Girl. Those films helped to establish Ford as a serious actor with dramatic, and sometimes comedic range beyond his signature characters. Ironically, the actor replaces the late Oscar-winning actor William Hurt as Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross / Red Hulk in Brave New World.

Continuing the events of Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Solider, Captain America: Brave New World finds Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) investigating an international incident. Along the way, he crosses paths with newly-elected President Ross who eventually transforms into the Red Hulk. Directed by Julius Onah with a script by Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton, the MCU installment co-stars Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Tim Blake Nelson.
