Longtime character actor Giancarlo Esposito has been on a roll in the past decade. After years as a frequent supporting player in Spike Lee movies, the actor has been working non-stop in major franchises including The Mandalorian and The Boys. Now entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Brave New World, Esposito expects to play a significant role in future installments.
Esposito’s mystery role as Sidewinder was previously revealed at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. Outside of his position as the leader of the Serpent Society, little information was revealed about the character at the Marvel panel. However, while appearing at the Chicago Fan Expo (via @AgentsFandom on X), Esposito teased more about Seth Voelker/Siderwinder’s goals as “a scientist; a great mind.” Additionally, the actor promised MCU fans that they “will see me do things that you’ve never seen me do before.”
Created by Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, and George Perez, Sidewinder was introduced in the pages of Marvel Two-in-One #64 (June 1980). An economist at Roxxon Oil Company, Voelker uncovered corruption when he was put into mutation. Transforming into the teleportation-powered hired criminal Sidewinder, he eventually splintered off from Roxxon to form the snake-themed Serpent Society. Voelker would be the first of three incarnations of the Sidewinder character in the comics.
Esposito’s Sidewinder was brought into Brave New World when the MCU installment underwent reshoots earlier this year. Rumors of poor test screenings after production wrapped last summer resulted in Moon Knight’s Matthew Orton being brought on to write new material. Esposito lobbied Marvel Studios for other characters in 2022, including a race-swapped Professor X in a future X-Men reboot and Dr. Doom prior to Robert Downey, Jr.’s casting. While the size of Esposito’s Sidewinder in Brave New World is unclear, the actor told fans at Phoenix Fan Fusion that “there will be a series afterwards” in his MCU future.
