Has Star Wars Already Confirmed Dark Rey As Merely A ‘Vision’ in The Rise of Skywalker?

When Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘s latest trailer was first shown at D23 this past weekend, the thing that caught everyone’s attention was the final few shots of Rey seemingly gone to the Dark Side and holding a double-edged red lightsaber. Since then we have heard every possible theory from clones, to Rey actually going dark, and even the least interesting(according to me and most I have spoken with), but most likely option of this being a vision that Rey sees of herself.

Now, what we’d expect is to only find out exactly what this all means when we go and see the movie in December this year. However, it is possible that Disney has shot themselves in the foot a little here and confirmed this as merely a vision before the speculation could really hot up.

This was brought to my attention by one of our readers on another article who mentioned this casually in the chat and I had to go investigate. Eagle-eyed fans on Reddit noticed that Star Wars.com had this in their description of the new footage for the movie, I’ll only transcribe the relevant part here.

“And of course the vision of a Rey with a reticulated red blade, was nothing short of thrilling.”

This was later changed after being noticed to,

“And of course the sight of Rey with a reticulated red blade, was nothing short of thrilling.”

Ok, it’s not a smoking gun and I typed out the extra ‘a’ in the first version which was clearly just a typo. However, does it not seems strange that after hitting Reddit, this was changed to say sight instead of vision? I have seen the Reddit thread and the original Image was screenshots, but I cannot share that screenshot with you here. I can assure you that this was up after D23 and changed not long after it appeared on Reddit.

So I guess the question remains for you to decipher, was this a mistake that they had to correct as it spoiled this aspect of the movie, or was it a genuine typing/grammar error which was corrected irrespective of its meaning?

Well, let me throw some more fuel on the evidence fire for you. In another Reddit post that you can find here, a user has worked out that at the edge of the screen you can actually glimpse someone else just out of shot backing away from Dark Side Rey. It’s impossible to tell who this is, but the garments make me think this is the proper version of Rey on the outside of this shot. Again, no smoking gun, but more evidence to ponder.

Add this up and my guess is that the simple answer is the most likely here. Rey has a vision similar to Luke in the cave on Dagobah in Empire. Rey sees herself as a Sith and backs away, possibly failing as Luke did, or not reacting aggressively and passing the test unlike Luke. If this is true, then for me, it’s another example of J.J. Abrams just taking something he liked from the OT and repackaging it for a new generation, something The Force Awakens got some hefty criticism for.

What do you think of all this, and if it is just a vison Rey is having, will you be cool with that, or disappointed there’s not more to it? Finally, do you think if it is a vision, that this was placed very carefully for marketing purposes alone? Share any thoughts you have in the usual spot below.
