It seems like forever ago, what with how quickly the news cycle constantly resets itself, that Spider-Man damn near broke the internet when he debuted at the end of the last CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR trailer. Since then, updates on the wall-crawler’s exploits have been few and far between. But now, thanks to some sleuthing by BBC, we may have something to chew on: A title for the film that’s going to serve as the launch of this all new cinematic Spider-Man!

BBC is reporting that Sony has registered a domain name that reveals the following as a possible name for the picture:

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

While domain names don’t always reveal a film’s title, a lot of the times they do. Take the James Bond smash hit SKYFALL. That title was revealed via the purchase of a domain name, and Sony had a hand in that film as well. 

This title could work on several levels, so join me here in Speculation Land:

For starters, we know that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will be the first iteration of the character to be officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As such, this could be considered a homecoming for longtime fans of the characters, who are happy to see Spidey mingle within the official primary Marvel continuity. 

There was also an issue of the Spider-Man comic book (#252) which bore the same title. In that film, Peter returns to his old stomping grounds, post-Secret Wars, with his symbiote suit. We know that he’ll be returning to NY with a new suit, following CIVIL WAR, and you can conceivably make the events in that film a stand-in for Secret Wars.

But- and here’s where my imagination runs wild– the title, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING also makes me think of earlier reports about the film’s tone. Early on, we were told by Marvel honcho Kevin Feige that they want to make the reboot almost feel like a John Hughes movie. The prolific filmmaker was famous for making coming-of-age stories that dealt with some of the day-to-day horrors of growing up, with ample amounts of humor and charm. He would often take mundane situations- a Sweet 16, Senior Prom, detention- and build movies around their lead character’s journey towards them.

Now, we already know that Holland is going to be portraying a teenaged Peter Parker. We also know his story is going to be set during the character’s high school years. Some high school’s are known for hosting Homecoming Parties- Celebrations where alumni from the school come back and interact with the current student body.

What if there’s a homecoming party looming, and there’s reason for Peter to be anxious about it? And his personal plight centers around what may happen at his school’s homecoming celebration? 

Could be a cute way to make SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING a title that is a wink to fans about Spidey finally coming home to Marvel, and actually part of the plot of a very Hughes-style teenage tale. Can’t you picture Flash Thompson, the bully that tormented Peter for so long, coming back as an alumnus and Peter struggling with whether or not he should confront him now that he has these great powers?

Just my speculation.
