If you’re like a lot of fans, you’re begrudgingly sitting out this current generation of Star Trek shows. Yes, it is a choice, but it’s not really one we relish in. See, many of us want to watch these shows, but we don’t want to support the lackluster streaming service CBS All Access. This is CBS’ first streaming service that launched back in 2014, and while it doesn’t seem to have caught on on the same level as, say, Disney+, it has stuck around.
By and large, however, it does seem to be the service that does little else but hoard Star Trek. Yes, they have one interesting gem in the form of The Twilight Zone, but apart from that…the only other big shows are Star Trek: Discovery or Star Trek: Picard. And you know what? It bugs the hell out of me.
But the times are changing, mergers are happening left and right, and with it a new strategy. Viacom and CBS are now ViacomCBS, and while that continues on the scary reality of there being too many big companies, it could be good for us fans.
According to CNBC, ViacomCBS will be launching a new streaming service. This one will reportedly build on CBS All Access and pile in the other assets from Viacom. These assets include Pluto TV, Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, Comedy Central, and Paramount Pictures. A premium version of the service would also apparently include Showtime.
While there is no name or title yet, the scuttlebutt is that the service will cost less than $10 a month. All I can say is…thank goodness. While the service is likely to be more expensive, it will have a lot more content that I’d be more willing to pay outside of the usual CBS shovelware. But will it be enough to help catapult ViacomCBS to the next level? That remains to be seen.
Either way, I think this is good news for the consumer, and likely good news for CBS All Access. While they’ve been around for six years, it’s telling that Disney+ was able to double their subscribers in just 24 hours. What do you think? Are you happy to see them potentially merge services?
