Letterman vs. Tarantino – The Fight That Almost Was

‘Who would win in a fight,’ a classic game that gives nerds and film lovers a way to really geek out. Han Solo vs. Indiana Jones, to Jon McClane vs John Wick, I think we’ve all spent a good amount of hours having these debates. The weirdest one I remember being a part of was, “Yoda vs The Fonz” how or why match-up this was suggested I don’t quite remember, but Yoda obviously prevailed.

One fight that I’ve never wondered about is David Letterman vs. Quentin Tarantino. Letterman recently appeared on  Showtime’s Desus & Mero and talked about feuds he has had with other famous fellows. He mentioned Tarantino becoming upset after Letterman joked that he couldn’t believe the (unnamed) celebrity he was interviewing on his late-night show, was dating Tarantino.

Check out how it went down in Letterman’s own words below.

“I was saying, ‘No, you’re not dating Quentin Tarantino.’ And she said, ‘Yes, yes I am.’ And I said, ‘No please tell me this isn’t true.’ Now, I’m joking. So I’m thinking the idea is Quentin Tarantino is this movie store nerd … I’m pretending that I’m stunned this glorious movie star is dating this little squirrelly guy.

Letterman said his assistant received a call from Tarantino a couple of days later,

“Then he starts screaming at me. ‘I’m going to beat you to death! I’m going to kill you! I’m coming to New York, and I’m gonna beat the crap out of you! How can you say that about me?!’

Letterman continued:

“So I now say ‘OK, how do you want to do this? Bat or fists?’ He says ‘Bat, you get me a bat and I’ll beat the hell out of you with it.'”

In the end, fisticuffs between the comedian and director never happened. The two did exchange apologies when Tarantino appeared on Letterman’s show to promote Inglorious Bastards. This is one of the more bizarre Hollywood ‘beefs’ I’ve come across, it makes me wonder what other celebrity feud stories Letterman has to tell. I’ve included videos of awkward situations involving both Letterman and Tarantino, though not with each other.

Who would you bet on in this fight (circa 2009)? Let us know in the comments down below!
