HBO Chief Considering Potential Chernobyl Follow-Up

Out of nowhere, HBO’s Chernobyl became a gigantic success for the premium cable network. Created by Craig Mazin, Chernobyl generated massive ratings, with its viewership growing every week. The global phenomenon went on to garner 12 million viewers, becoming the most watched HBO limited or miniseries since the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-produced Band Of Brothers.

Recently, Chernobyl earned 19 Emmy nominations, which has led to speculation as to whether HBO has any plans of following up its success with another historical miniseries from Mazin and executive producers Carolyn Strauss and Jane Featherstone. HBO president of programming Casey Bloys had this to say to Deadline regarding the channel’s future plans with the Chernobyl crew:

“We have a deal with Craig, and he is thinking about a lot of things. Obviously he has an interest in history but we are not looking to make a franchise out of it. There is no plans to specifically find another manmade or natural disaster and talk about it. But if he says, ‘I really want to explore this’, and [if] there is a really good story there, an important story, we would be open to it. Anything he gets excited about I would get excited about.”

Chernobyl is easily one of HBO’s greatest productions. Mazin’s masterful writing blended historical fact with gripping, emotional drama that placed the viewer at ground zero of one of the most devastating man-made disasters in history. It’s Emmy nominations and soaring ratings speaks to how the project captured the attention of millions of viewers and critics alike. The series has become Mazin’s calling card, and whatever he has planned next, it is bound to have the same creative blueprint as his current masterpiece.

Chernobyl is currently available for streaming on the HBO Go and HBO Now apps.
