HBO do tend to do this every year as a form of advertising, it’s a “Hey, look at all the great content coming out this year, so please subscribe” and when it comes to HBO, consumers tend to find the quality of the shows on offer very appealing.
Last year was possibly slightly less exciting than previous years and that was due to the absence of Game of Thrones, probably the biggest TV show of all time and HBO’s crown jewel. Of course, we know Game of Thrones has its 8th and final season arriving on the cable network starting April 14th and fans are desperate for any glimpses they can get of the new season.
So this HBO teaser has become quite the hit online already in the last 24 hours and I’d guess most of that traffic is due to the shots of Game of Thrones season 8 that have never been seen before.
I’ll cover that first of all, as it’s pretty simple to analyze, we see Daenerys Targaryen’s armies arriving at Winterfell, something we expect to happen in the very first few scenes of Season 8. We see them marching towards Winterfell as Drogon flies past, it then cuts to Arya Stark who looks up in amazement at her first ever sighting of a real-life dragon. It’s not much, but it’s the first thing we’ve really seen other than a few still images of Season 8 so far.
It’s not just Game of Thrones either, there must be 20 other drama series previewed here including new footage for Watchmen and even His Dark Materials which had its first teaser released only yesterday. His Dark Materials is a co-production between BBC and HBO, with HBO picking up most of the budget, something that was only ever rumored previously.

I won’t list all the various shows here, as some I am completely unfamiliar with, but for us geeks, Game of Thrones and Watchmen were probably the biggest draws.
