Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen graphic novel published by DC Comics in the late 1980’s is not your typical comic book. Receiving both comics and mainstream critical acclaim, including being included in Time‘s list of the 100 best novels. It has also been made into a feature film by Zack Snyder in 2009. In 2012 DC Comics published a set of prequel comics titled Before Watchmen and in 2017 a twelve issue limited series titled Doomsday Clock written by Geoff Johns, which has been plagued by delays.
Now this year Watchmen is ready to make it’s television adaptation debut on HBO, helmed by the Lost creator Damon Lindelof. Last night HBO released a trailer with all of it’s 2019 offerings, which included a brief look at the highly anticipated Watchmen series. You can check it out above.
As you can see, although brief there is a lot we can see in the footage. This includes our first look at Jeremy Irons as Adrian Veidt otherwise known as Ozymandias, the highly intelligent superhero who turned mass murderer, when he destroyed New York City in an insane plan to save the world. Also it would seem like we also get our first look at Rorschach, the dark vigilante who is killed by Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen. It would seem that like in Doomsday Clock, someone else has taken the mantle of the character.
We also get a quick look at some new characters, for example someone that is wearing a gold mask, as well as another character who is all in red. Looking at the footage we can see that masks will be a theme for Watchmen as we see the police officers also wearing yellow masks to conceal their identity. What kind of danger could your identity put you in this world?
We know that Lindelof’s vision of Watchmen will take place in the same universe established by the graphic novel, but it will break away from the events that have already been featured in the books and Snyder’s film.
