Joaquin Phoenix Apparently “Crushes It” As The Joker

My favorite villain in the DC Universe has always been the Joker, with so many great story arcs in comics, animated series and in feature films. As much as I enjoy seeing the Clown Prince of Crime, I also feel that DC and Warner Bros. needs to put him away for a while and focus on some of Batman’s other amazing villains. But we know that won’t happen anytime soon as there is a solo Joker film set to debut in theaters this fall.

Early on during this project directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, there was a lot of skepticism about the quality of the film, especially with it not being part of the DCEU. But when it went into production and Phillips released a couple of images, plus leaked footage of the shooting and photos, it has seemed to be gaining some steam. So much so that it is the only DC film on a top ten most anticipated films for 2019 conducted by Fandango joining likes of other highly anticipated films like Avengers: Endgame, Star Wars: Episode IX and the Disney Studios’ classic animated remakes like Aladdin.

Over the weekend, we got some news about the film. According to Justin Shanlian from the Shanlian on Batman Podcast, he has been told by many people that Phoenix seems to have “crushed” the role and that the script has “nailed the character”. Check out the Tweet below!

This will be a different origin story than what we have heard in the past. Set in the 1980s the film will follow Phoenix’s character Arthur Fleck in Gotham City. he is a failed comedian who becomes the Joker after failing to make it. Joining Phoenix on the film will be Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. This will be DC’s first film set outside of the current cinematic universe.

I must admit that even though I am tired of seeing the Joker over and over again, it will be interesting to see how they portray the character in a world without the pressures of continuity. A few years ago the comic books also took the path of “story first” when they rebooted with Rebirth and it paid off. Hopefully, the rumors are correct and this film does well.
