HBO’s The Case Against Adnan Syed: Episode 4

The final chapter of HBO’s documentary starts with Adnan Syed waiting in his cell as the courts decide whether to retry his case. With the amount of information showing the state did not show direct evidence to convict Syed, including the contradictions of Jay Wilds and testimony of eye witness Asia McClain, things seem to be weighing in Syed’s favor. Now, the families wait to hear the results of a nearly twenty year battle.

Meanwhile, three candidates are running for Maryland Attorney General. A candidate looking to exonerate Syed, one who is fighting to deny Syed’s retrial, and one that had yet to take a side. With that playing in the background, Syed’s attorney Justin Brown and his private investigators examine how the initial case never tested the DNA found in the car. A forensic scientist points out to them fallacies in the autopsy, and Brown explains how the number of items tested for DNA did not match Syed’s.

As the days inch closer to the retrial decision, Syed’s mother has kept something secret from her son that she reveals to family friend Rabia Chaudry. A secret that adds only more weight to an already heavily emotional situation. Everything comes to a head as the series comes to close, revealing what the future holds for Adnan Syed and those fighting for his freedom.
