After years of wondering if it would, a Heat 2 movie is happening soon and director Michael Mann teases a possible Adam Driver role. I doubt I need to explain what Heat is to the average movie fan. My guess is most people my age (40+) and those a decade (or more) either side have either seen the movie, or heard about it.
The big focus back in 1995 was that the movie starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Despite these powerhouse actors both starring in The Godfather Part II, their stories were in alternate timelines. Thus, the actors never shared the screen together. Their coffee shop scene together in Heat was therefore famous before the movie even released.
As for Heat 2, the movie began life as a novel released whilst Mann was shooting his latest film Ferrari, starring Adam Driver. Though Mann had said Heat 2 would happen previously, he now confirms in a recent interview with Deadline it will be the next movie he shoots.
“Yes,” Mann explained. “Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari. It did very well. I plan to shoot that next.”
The trade also asked Mann if his Ferrari star Adam Driver could be cast in the movie?
“Perhaps,” Mann said of the possibility of reuniting with Driver. “We don’t talk about that yet. Let me put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on Ferrari]. We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other and we had a great time working together artistically.”

There has been some rumors Mann was looking for Driver to play the role of young Neil McCauley. McCauley is the character played by De Niro in the original. As fans of the movie will note, Heat ends with McCauley killed, the last man standing of his crew. McCauley goes down and takes the hand of the man who shot him, Detective Vincent Hanna as he passes.
However the story of Heat 2 isn’t really just a sequel, it’s also a prequel. The story, like The Godfather Part II has two separate timelines that are connected. The first being the stories of McCauley and his crew, and also Detective Hanna prior to the events of Heat. The other half of the story is set after the events of Heat, at which point McCauley has been shot and killed.
Mann seems to think there is still a huge appetite for Heat and it’s certainly a movie which has aged like fine wine. My only doubt for what would surely be a big budget movie is whether the younger section of the demographic has come across the original?
Heat isn’t in my top 20 all time movies. However, it is probably in the top 100, it’s a damn good movie. I’d definitely be interested in the sequel. I’ve stayed away from the book as I’d rather see the movie first and fresh.
So, the Heat 2 movie is happening soon and the director Michael Mann teases a possible role for Adam Driver. What do you think of Mann’s comments? Thoughts below as always.
