Ever since it was announced that Hellboy would be getting a rebooted series, the studio was out to make it clear as to why it needed to be separated from what Guillermo del Toro did with the franchise in years before. While they were fan-favorite films, they were never able to capture the nature of the comics due to their PG-13 nature. This new franchise would apparently be able to capture that in all its bloody glory.
And yet, when the first footage of the Hellboy reboot hit, there was little violence to speak of, and the tone wasn’t really much different from what we’d come to expect from the del Toro flicks, forcing me to wonder if there was any point in rebooting this thing. The last trailer was a bit better on that front, but I think the biggest differences are noticeable in this latest “R-RATED Sizzle Reel” from Joblo. Yeah, this one pretty much takes gore to the next level.

Over the course of the one minute and 20 second reel, we see the villain get her head cut off and her body get pieced back together, a guy get slammed against a staff and seemingly impaled, a dude get split in half, a dude get his face ripped off, a monster get impaled, and dude get stabbed in the head, and plenty of other gore-riffic moments.
In short, if you wanted more gore and language in your Hellboy, this is right up your alley. Now it’s clear why they had to go a different route for this reboot. I only hope it’s good enough to justify itself, because no matter how different it is, if it’s no good, why bother?
