Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen was announced not even two weeks ago, yet we already have our first promotional art for the upcoming reboot. The film will star Stranger Thing‘s David Harbour as Mike Mignola’s creation, and will be written by Mignola, Andrew Cosby (Eureka), and Christopher Golden (writer of TV movies and two Buffy the Vampire Slayer videogames). The R-rated film will be directed by Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent), who is touching up the script with Aron Coleite (Heroes, Star Trek: Discovery).
IGN has revealed the first promo art for Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, which is simply beautiful artwork by Mignola, accompanied by the new title and the release date of next year. The artwork is currently on displaty at the 2017 Cannes Film Festical.
Sure, it’s not even concept art of Harbour as Hellboy, and could literally be a panel from one of Mignola’s books, but at least now we know to expect a shotgun and cigarettes.
Though I enjoyed the first Hellboy directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman, the sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, was not my favorite. I’m very excited for this new, R-rated direction, and am hoping for a more adult comic book film like Logan, in more ways than just gory violence. What I really want is more Nazis like the first film…
Harbour is one of my favorite actors working today, and I can’t wait until we get our first picture of piece of concept art incorporating his likeness into that of Hellboy’s. It will be interesting to see what design decisions are made to differentiate this version from del Toro’s.
