Hello There! Did An Unannounced Star Wars Game Just Leak Onto PSN?

Is there a new Star Wars game on the horizon?

Star Wars has always been quite the oddball franchise when it comes to video games. Back when Disney bought Lucasfilm, it was assumed there’d be an uptick in the number of games set in the galaxy far, far away. Instead, the offerings we’ve been given have been fairly limited and mostly controversial. Though, while Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order recently came out, eyes have been cast to the future. With a bit of momentum on their side, could we be seeing a new game sooner rather than later?

The answer, apparently, is a resounding yes. Quite mysteriously, earlier this morning, Sony added a project to their European PlayStation Network called Star Wars: Project Maverick. The accompanying image shows a Star Destroyer hovering above what could be Mustafar, the volcanic planet where Anakin and Obi-Wan have their epic fight that leaves Anakin dismembered.

What Is This New Star Wars Game?

But did this project come out of left field? As it turns out, no. Kotaku put together a report that chronicled a fairly recent smattering of Star Wars cancellations from Electronic Arts. Buried in the report was the mention of a “smaller Star Wars project” EA Vancouver that could replace one of their cancellations. The plan, according to the piece, is for the game to release alongside the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.

“Electronic Arts executives liked to call it a financial hole that needed filling,” the report read. As such, it doesn’t sound like this is exactly going to be a labor of love, but rather them filling a void to help capitalize on the next-gen consoles. The writer of the article, Jason Schreier, confirmed on Twitter that Star Wars: Project Maverick is indeed the one that he was writing about in the piece.

As far as what this game could possibly be…only time will tell. As indicated, I’m expecting this to be on the smaller side, but what does smaller mean? I mean, I don’t expect us to get something odd like Star Wars: Puzzle Wars or anything. How can they create a game that manages to successfully take advantage of next-gen consoles without letting down fans in terms of scope and scale? I’m sure it’s a question EA has been asking from the very beginning.

What do you think of this new project? Are you excited for it at all or are you all about the big games? Let us know in the comments down below!
