Henry Cavill Was Apparently A Bit Too Chubby For James Bond

If you’ve been following Hollywood casting lore for years now, you’ll know that way back in the mid-2000s, you’ll know that one Henry Cavill was in the running to play everyone’s favorite British agent James Bond. Of course, the role eventually went to the great Daniel Craig, whose tenure is ending with next year’s No Time to Die, his fifth James Bond movie.

But what reason did the studio have for not casting him? I’m sure there were a few of them, but it did sound like Henry Cavill wasn’t exactly in the shape they wanted him to be in for the role, as he revealed to Men’s Health.

“I probably could have prepared better. I remember the director, Martin Campbell, saying, ‘Looking a little chubby there, Henry,’” Cavill recalled. “I didn’t know how to train or diet. And I’m glad Martin said something, because I respond well to truth. It helps me get better.”

Well, as we’ve seen recently, he certainly knows how to diet and train now.

That wasn’t the only role he missed out on. Cavill was apparently also lost out on the lead role in Twilight as Edward Cullen, which went to Robert Pattinson, who will, interestingly enough, be playing Batman very soon.

“I wasn’t ecstatic about not getting these things,” Cavill told the outlet, “but I was so used to disappointment from the acting business, and also from boarding school. ‘No, you’re not good enough’—that wasn’t anything new to me.”

Cavill has since come a long way, and while his Superman isn’t the most critically-acclaimed, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t think he was up to the role, given better material to work with.
