Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker – J.J. Abrams Admits That Endings Scare Him

J.J. Abrams is always the guy to go to for strong beginnings. He’s basically patented the “mystery box” form of storytelling, which generally gives audiences a lot of intriguing questions to chew on, but he’s not so great at paying them off. More often than not, he’s left his TV shows long before their endings, so he’s only had to worry about setting up intriguing premises rather than paying them off.

It’s because of this reason that fans were worried about him taking on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, a film that isn’t only the end of a trilogy, but the end of a nine-part saga. In many ways, it’s the ultimate ending, and we’re dealing with a filmmaker who did a solid job setting up a new trilogy but who had to do something he wasn’t exactly known for.

So, what was Abrams’ approach with The Rise of Skywalker?

“What is the true resolution of this saga?” Abrams said in a recent video from EW. “What feels right? So if someone is watching these movies — all nine of them — they’re watching a story that is as cohesive of possible. This is to say that while there are many things that were planned and discussed, that doesn’t mean there isn’t discovery, doesn’t mean there aren’t things that come up and say, ‘Oh, here’s an opportunity.’

Abrams continued: “It also doesn’t mean, ‘Oh, here’s a list of payoffs that we have to do because of setups,’ but we also were very much aware this was the end of the trilogy, and it needs to satisfy. And endings were the thing that, frankly, scare me the most, so going into this thing, knowing this had to be an ending — and we’re not screwing around — so this was about bringing this thing to a close in a way that was as emotional and as meaningful and also as satisfying, in terms of something that can answer questions, as much as possible.”

If nothing else, this will give Abrams a chance to prove himself as a more well-rounded storyteller. I’ve personally been wondering for years if he could ever cap off a story, and while the stakes are as high as they’ve ever been, I’d like nothing more than to see him rise to the occasion.
