It was a little bit odd last Friday when we got a teaser for what was being billed as a stupid-looking Crocodile Dundee spinoff. In this supposed story, Crocodile Dundee is missing, and it’s up to his son, played by Danny McBride, to find him.
The trailer was the stuff of straight-to-DVD movies, and while Danny McBride would’ve added a whole lot to it, I was skeptical it could become anything more than tolerable. The whole thing reeked of a large-scale prank, and while I was off about my predictions of what it could be, it turns out I was halfway right.
RELATED – Chris Hemsworth Is Also In The Crocodile Dundee Movie
As suspected, there is no Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home. So what were the two trailers (not to mention IMDb page and movie site) actually advertising? It’s a campaign for Tourism Australia that’s set to air during the Super Bowl next month.
So what was the smoking gun? For starters, Chris Hemsworth — who was featured in the second teaser — is the “tourism ambassador” for Australia. The second one is the fact that the “film”s director Steve Rogers (no relation to Captain America) is an award-winning commercial director, who’s worked with such companies as Nike and Old Spice.
While Tourism Australia hasn’t confirmed these teasers as a part of a campaign, it seems like it’s only matter of time.
