Chad Stahelski, the Highlander reboot director gives a small update on the status of the movie in a recent podcast appearance. The Highlander reboot was announced some time ago now and it was Henry Cavill tapped to play Connor McLeod. Then, all went quiet on the movie, so where does it stand? Stahelski appeared recently on Happy, Sad Confused and had this to say.
“I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline ‘there can only be one,’ you can’t just kill everybody the first time,” he explains. “I’ll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that.”
“But we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property.”
Now there are some sites reporting that Stahelski has pegged this reboot as a prequel instead. I don’t think that’s what Stahelski is saying here folks. I could be wrong, but I think this is indeed a full reboot and will star Cavill (until we hear different) as Connor.

What I think Stahelski is saying is that it won’t be a direct reboot of the original which was actually the climax of ‘The Gathering’. Instead I’ll guess we begin with how Connor became Immortal, his training and perhaps his first big test. Leaving perhaps room to build towards a final confrontation with the Kurgan, or whoever the bad guy is in a second, or third movie.
There are risks in this approach, if the first movie loses money. However, I don’t imagine we are getting a AAA budget on this one. Therefore, the movie should find it easier to make a profit. Cavill’s fee is probably the biggest ticket item. Everything else is set design, costuming, and choreography, if the script is good. Unless the movie is rubbish, there is a good chance it will make a profit.
I have to say, this was my issue with Highlander’s sequels back in the day. The first movie was the end and then we got several sequels which made less and less sense. Ergo, was I in Stahelski’s boots, this is the approach I would be taking (see related section above). Still, that remains to be seen.
What do you think as Highlander reboot director Chad Stahelski gives an update on the status of the movie? Thoughts below as always.
