Hive | Yllka Gashi And Blerta Basholli Talk About Fahrije Hoti’s Life Story [Exclusive Interview]

Blerta Basholli brings to screen Hive. A film that covers part of Fahrije Hoti’s true story during the war in Kosovo. Signing on Yllka Gashi for her first protagonist lead role. 

The Synopsis 

Sundance triple award winner HIVE is a searing drama based on the true story of Fahrije (Yllka Gashi), who has battled grief and financial struggle since her husband went missing during the war in Kosovo. In hope of providing for her family, she launches a business selling hot pepper pre- serves, a controversial act of independence that scandalizes her patriarchal village. Amid doubts of her husband’s return, she struggles not only to keep her family afloat but against a hostile community who seeks to violently undermine the independence and sisterhood she is determined to gain.

The writer and director Blerta Basholli is known for her covering social and gender issues in her motherland, Kosovo. The filmmaker has won several awards and recognitions for her work. She has worked in films like Mirror, Mirror…, Gjakova 726, Lean and Me and Everything Is Broken Up and Dances

Yllka Gashi as “Fahrije” in HIVE.

The actress, Yllka Gashi started acting at the age of 17 in Prishtina/Kosovo. Where she was born and raised. Gashi did theater, short and feature films in addition to television films. It’s no surprise to know she is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and Artist Ambassador for Save the Children in Kosovo after experiencing being a onetime refugee. In 2018 she made her debut on stage in the US for the on an off Broadway show Women On Fire-Stories From The Frontlines

I was connected to speak with Yllka Gashi and Blerta Basholli for the release of Hive in the US. The filmmaker shared the moment she heard the news about Fahrije Hoti, why she decided to make this film and in finding the right protagonist. Gashi expressed how fortunate she felt to be a part of this project and working with Basholli.

Hive is now available in theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
