Ghostbusters: Afterlife is hitting theaters soon (November, 19th) and a lot of people are incredibly excited. I remain a bit skeptical, due to being a grown man and not interested in watching 12yos bust ghosts, but I do hope it is good and believe my 8yo son will like it. However, that is a discussion for the Daily Cup of Genre (subscribe and never miss an episode). Anyways, the highly anticipated sequel has been in the works for some time and the renewed interest led me to discover something amazing, the Ghostbusters 3D print cosplay community.

Every Fan’s Dream: A Proton Pack

While I don’t want to watch 12yos be Ghostbusters on the big screen, I do wish I had a Proton Pack when I was 12. Hell, I still want one. Wait… I can get one! The world of 3D printing seems daunting from the outside. It’s expensive to get up and going, the learning curve can be steep, and what about learning to model things to print? Well, the Facebook group 3D Printed Ghostbusters Props has everything you need. Even the occasional 3D printer for sale.

The group is home to the (should be) world famous “Q-Pack” and so much more. Why is the Q-Pack so desired? Detail, optimization, and support. Also, it’s technically free to get the plans. However, this group lives off your kindness and there are donation links attached to the files for many projects. Tipping is definitely encouraged, and that means even you Europe and Asia!

The Tools

The Q-Pack (created by Quentin Machiels) is on version 123.48.0a I think, but there are people there with traps, goggles, PKE meters, The Real Ghostbusters version of the Proton Pack, and links or sources for all of the lights and sounds to make the projects complete! Need a Ghostbusters: The Video Game upgrade? They’ve got it. Want a Slime Blower from Ghostbusters 2? Yup, that’s there too. Marc Carabelli is an interesting dude that isn’t into Ghostbusters as much as others, but the dude is a Mad 3D Printing Scientist!

Don’t forget to use the search function though, as many questions already have answers. That doesn’t mean no one will answer you if you have one though.

The Talent

Who are Marc and Quentin? From What I gather they’re the beating heart of the group. The ones tirelessly drowning in mesh, CAD, slicing, and filament. They’re also the ones that talked to me the most.

The Community

Now that you’ve printed your gear, what can you do? Sadly, there are no ghosts to bust, not that science can prove at least, but you could suit-up and head into town for a fair, movie premier, or charity event. That’s right, not only does bustin make you feel good, but so will getting out there with other fans and putting some smiles on other people’s faces.

A really cool group is the South Australia Ghostbusters. This group immediately responded when I asked for something cool to put here about Ghostbusters in the community. Dave McCauley sent me some information on what they do and answered some questions:

South Austrailia Ghostbusters

LRM Online- What makes Australian Ghostbusters fans unique?

Dave McCauley- I believe what makes Australian Ghostbusters fans unique is that even though our franchises are located on opposite sides of the country, we are happy to help our fellow Ghostbusters, and are determined to help each other despite the obstacles of having little Ghostbusters stock sent to our great country.

LRM- When did you (personally) see/get into our beloved Ghostbusters?

DM- Ghostbusters 2 came out at the cinema when I was 6 years old, and so I saw Ghostbusters 2 and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon before I saw Ghostbusters. I fell in love with the brand/franchise because it laid the framework for me to help me fight the psychological monsters under my bed and helped me deal with the negative things in my life.

It wasn’t until the last few years that I have been confident in who I am as a person who loves Ghostbusters and Star Trek, and wanted to do something to help the community and share my love of the Ghostbusters.

LRM- What does the cosplay/printing community bring to their area?

DM- My aim for the South Australia Ghostbusters was to bring people together with like minds and interests, to cosplay for a cause. Then, we discovered that there was a charity car already done up as a Ghostbusters car, so we decided to align ourselves with that charity (SA Variety) selling our patches and pins. I also wanted to band together with the other franchises and groups across Australia to ensure we were all on the same page, and we had contact details to help each other out for ideas and getting each group ready for the new movie release and increased interest.

I am finding that each member of my crew are bringing their own expertise to the group with 3D Printing, electronics, events/promotions, organization skills and contacts among others. As we work together more closely, I am also observing that our members are helping each other out with their GB gear, with their different experiences. We are finding that the Ghostbusters community, at large, globally, is made up of these factors with people helping each other  out with various items of the props and clothing to be made or purchased.

LRM- If you had to pick the form of the Destructor, who/what are we fighting?

DM- Good Question… If I were to choose the form of the Destructor, we would probably be fighting something that resembles a shape-shifter, that could change form to be anyone or anything, no matter the size.

Now, if that isn’t something to get into, what is? Thanks Dave!

Choose The Form Of The Destructor

I really don’t have a good reason for that sub-heading. It just sounds cool! Also, I wrote the heading before giving the questions and did not intend to have repeating themes. Oh well. I love the original two films, a couple of games, and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon and while I may have reservations about Afterlife, I really hope that it turns out great for me and my son. No matter what the movie brings, I will be starting my own journey down the Q-Pack road next month. I have a Creality Ender-3 Max with a BL Touch upgrade. Don’t worry, I’ll be documenting my journey for the group and you, our loyal readers.

I hope you find something to bring the inner Egon, Winston, Peter, or Ray in each of you. Just remember, don’t cross the streams.

Do you have a 3D Printed Proton Pack? Also, Are you in a Ghostbusters Cosplay community? Be sure to check out the groups, and don’t forget to share the treasures you find.
