Horror Films For Your Halloween On Amazon Prime

For the last two weeks, I’ve given you a number of horror movies you can check out on both Netflix and Hulu. Now, to round out the current top 3 streaming services—I say ‘current’ because of the onslaught of new streaming services entering the ring starting this November—here’s the cinematic chills and thrills the Bezos Empire has to offer.

Like Netflix and Hulu, Amazon does offer episodic content for you out to consume. Eerie original series’ like Good Omens, Carnival Row, and the podcast-based anthology series Lore fit right in with the season. With that said, here are some standouts in Amazon Prime’s horror/thriller library.

George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead

The genesis of zombie movies came from a horror revolutionary. Romero’s iconic 1968 black and white tale depicts a small group of people holed up in a house, struggling to survive an onslaught of zombies—and each other. In one of the first films to have an African-American main character (Duane Jones), the film’s frightening plot is topped off perfectly with its social commentary.

The Friday The 13th Franchise

Camp Crystal Lake, a hockey mask, and the “chi-chi-chi, ha-ha-ha” sound. If you don’t know what those three elements mean, then you have some serious horror homework to do. One of the pioneers of the Slasher genre, Friday The 13th focuses on a group of camp counselors terrorized by a vicious serial killer. Like it’s predecessors and successors, this series saw a number of sequels and reboots throughout the decades. Yet, it remains one of the forefathers of the horror genre.

It Comes At Night

Starring Joel Edgerton, Carmen Ejogo, and Christopher Abbott, this 2017 film tells the tale of a family that has survived in isolation through an unnatural global threat—thanks to the father’s tenuous domestic order. However, that order is threatened when a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.

Hereditary

Toni Collette gives a rousing performance in one of 2018’s most compelling and chilling films. When her ill mother passes away, Annie (Collette) and her family (portrayed exquisitely by Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, and Milly Shapiro) mourn in different ways—including Annie and her daughter both dabbling in the supernatural. Writer/director Ari Aster (Midsommar) and Cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski create dark, haunting visuals that will stick with you well after seeing the film.

Suspiria

This 2018 remake of the Dario Argento 1977 horror flick features a mix of talented actresses, including Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Tilda Swinton. Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name), this film tells the tale of a newcomer to a prestigious dance school—and how a darkness within the school focuses its grasp on her, the artistic director, and a grieving psychotherapist.

Event Horizon

In 1997, Paul W.S. Anderson directed this sci-fi/horror blend of “hell in space.” A rescue crew (Lawrence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, Jason Isaacs, Richard T. Jones, Joely Richardson, and Sean Pertwee) investigates a spaceship that has emerged after disappearing into a black hole years before. While the ship is intact, the crew is no where to be found—and the rescue crew soon discovers that something else has come back with the ship.
