Horror Films For Your Halloween On Netflix

It’s October. Depending on where you live in the United States, you may be noticing that Autumn chill, the leaves changing colors, and the influx of pumpkin spice-flavored desserts. For those who share in the same seasonal delights as this writer, you are most likely yearning for a few cinematic scares. Luckily, many channels are having their own Halloween and horror-filled marathons throughout the entire month. For the family, Freeform is having its “31 Days of Halloween,” featuring films like Hocus PocusThe Nightmare Before Christmas, and Ghostbusters. Starting Sunday, October 13th, AMC will begin its annual “FearFest,” showing nothing but horror films 24 hours a day (aside from the Sunday evening airings of The Walking Dead) through Halloween night. Moreover, the big three streaming services have recently made additions to their libraries just in time for the season. The following are just a few of the scares you can experience on Netflix.

NOTE: This following list contains movies only, since binging an entire series can result in less movie viewing. However, if you insist on a show or two, definitely check out The Haunting Of Hill House and Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. Additionally, all 14 seasons of Supernatural are also available.

Scream 1- 4.

The tongue-in-cheek horror film that was equal parts smart comedy and thrilling horror, and its sequels, are all available for streaming. Written by Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s CreekThe Following) and starring Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Rose McGowan, Matthew Lillard, Jamie Kennedy, and Drew Barrymore, the film told the original story of a masked killer stalking high school students while paying homage to its predecessors in the genre. The fourth film in the franchise brought the story full circle, combining the original (surviving) cast with new castmates Emma Roberts (Scream QueensAmerican Horror Story), Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), Alison Brie (GLOW), Rory Culkin (Castle Rock), and Marley Shelton (Grindhouse: Planet Terror). All four films in the series are directed by the legendary Wes Craven (A Nightmare On Elm Street).

The Witch.

The eerie and creepy levels are at an all-time high in director Robert Eggers (soon-to-be-released The Lighthouse) first feature film. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy (SplitGlass), Ralph Ineson (Guardians Of The GalaxyThe Ballad Of Buster Scruggs), and Katie Dickie (Star Wars: The Last JediGame Of Thrones), The Witch tells the folktale-inspired story of a family in 1630s New England being torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic, and possession. This film does not rely on visual and musical jump scares to frighten the viewer. Instead, Eggers creates a slow-burn of a story that relies on dark, haunting visuals. Separated from other communities, the utter loneliness of the family enduring this haunting creates an exercise in psychological torture that any horror fan can appreciate.

In The Tall Grass.

This Netflix film—based on the 2012 novella written by the legendary Stephen King and his son Joe Hill—tells the tale of six individuals lost within a vast field of tall grass doubling as an altering maze. Starring Laysla De Olivera (The Gifted), Avery Whitted (The Vanishing Of Sidney Hall), Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring, Watchmen), and Will Buie, Jr. (Daytime Divas), the film creates a claustrophobic feel throughout as the tall grass surrounds the characters, and then leads way to an evil purpose. Adapted for the screen and directed by Vincenzo Natali.

Carrie (1976).

The first Stephen King book adapted into a film, this horror classic directed by Brian De Palma (The Untouchables, Scarface) stars Sissy Spacek in her breakout role. Pushed to the brink by the bullies in her class, Carrie unleashes her telekinetic powers to exact revenge upon them. Nancy Allen (Robocop), P.J. Soles (Halloween, Stripes), and John Travolta costar.

Insidious

The creative duo behind Saw (writer Leigh Wannell and director James Wan) teamed up again for a paranormal thriller. Starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne (Neighbors, X-Men: First Class), Ty Simpkins (Avengers: Endgame, Jurassic World, Iron Man 3), and Lin Shaye (Ouija, Me, Myself, & Irene), Insidious focuses on a family looking to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

The Conjuring.

After making a name for himself with the Saw series and Insidious, director James Wan tackled the true story of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, beautifully played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel, The Departed). After being sought out, the Warrens attempt to rid a family’s farmhouse of the dark presence that has been terrorizing them. Considered by this writer as one of the best horror films of the 21st century—using perfectly placed jump scares and cinematography that heightens the level of fear—The Conjuring also stars Ron Livingston (A Million Little Things, Office Space), and Lili Taylor (American Crime).

Train To Busan

Released in South Korea in 2016, this fresh take on the zombie genre became one of the biggest hits in the region. As the first-ever zombie apocalypse movie out of South Korea, Train To Busan became the first South Korean film to cross the $1 million mark in the Singapore box office, the first Korean film in 2016 to break the audience record of over 10 million theatergoers, and scored a 95% certified fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. In the film, as the zombie virus spreads throughout the country, survivors aboard a train struggle to survive the trip from Seoul to Busan. If you don’t mind subtitles, this film is a horror thrill ride from beginning to end, filled with genuine human emotion and amazing cinematic set-pieces.

These are just a few of the numerous horror flicks to choose from on Netflix. Also, keep it locked in on the LRM website, as my next “Horror Films for Halloween” article will feature Hulu’s scares and thrills worthy of your attention.
