House of the Dragon to hit in 2022?

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve talked about the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon with any earnest. And it makes sense. A lot has been going on in the world since that project started taking off. COVID has reigned supreme, and countless projects were stalled and delayed. Many fans couldn’t help but wonder what this meant for the prequel series, but now, sometime after major updates, we have a new one form a legit source.

During the Emmys, HBO President Casey Bloys (via Bleeding Cool) revealed some details surrounding the fantasy series. For starters, he said that the casting of House of the Dragon is currently underway. He didn’t say this, but I would imagine that much of this is taking place over Zoom calls as much as possible. But casting is one thing…what about actually premiering the series?

Bloys stated the show is still on track for a 2022 premiere. Of course, he didn’t specify when in 2022, so that gives us a solid year of potential time there. However, given that they’re just in the casting phase, and studios are still figuring out how to film in the midst of COVID, it’ll likely be a bit before filming starts anyway. My guess is production would begin in the summer of next year, assuming COVID-prevention practices are working. If not, a late 2021 production could still easily make a late 2022 release.

But, as with all things nowadays, make sure not to get too attached to any scrap of information. Though this does come from an official source, things are changing on a daily basis. That being said, I think a 2022 release of House of the Dragon is a good one. It’s far enough away from the Game of Thrones finale that people will be less burned. Plus, hopefully, by then, they are ready to return to Westeros!
