Here’s my immediate review of House of the Dragon S3E04, on time for once and this week’s instalment was a bit of a mixed bag for me. As always, this is a Spoiler Free review so I won’t tell you who dies, who cries or who flies. Actually, I mention on character that flies this week, we shall see.
A Mixed Bag
There’s a lot to like in Episode 4, one or two moments really worked for me. I will point out once again that the dragons are blooming amazing in this series and whenever they are involved the series soars. Let’s be honest folks, the fans love the dragons more than any of the characters. Thus, when something bad happens to them, or there’s a threat to a dragon, the fans are on the edge of their seat. Well, maybe except one dragon that no one likes.
However, there are some scenes and moments that don’t work as well for me. The Aegon and Larys scenes are really good, most of what we see of Rhaenyra works, but not all of it. Daemon’s scenes are great, though the show once again seems to imply a dragon can fly to any location in Westeros within a day and then return. I guess we have lost that war continually since Game of Thrones Season 7, it’s just canon now.

The scenes I’m not sure worked as well as the writers and directors hope this week is the Green side of the story. I don’t want to get into details but I thought the supposed character development of one new antagonist into a moustache twirling villain was ill advised. It’s there for shock value, but you can see the set up coming a mile away and everything proceeds according plan. It just leaves you a little underwhelmed upon the moment we are supposed to be getting excited.
Oh, and I think we may be seeing a slight retcon materializing that was born out of Season 2 criticisms, but we shall see. Also, I think it’s pretty much accepted now that the showrunners of this series see the Green’s as the baddies and he Black’s as the ill fated goodies. Well, as good as anyone get’s in Westeros. Are they perhaps pushing that a little too hard though? That’s my worry.
Overall, I am still enjoying the series, it just doesn’t always quite hit the heights it could every week. Often the more pov’s we get in an episode the more they struggle to make them all land. Yet, we usually always get at least a few brilliant moments in each episode. You can’t say that about a lot of TV shows these days, not every week anyway.
GRADE: B+
Good episode, with one or two brilliant moments and the dragon work as always is brilliant. Not every sublot worked for me and I felt the core plot of this episode was somewhat telegraphed and underwhelming when the needle dropped.
