Yesterday HBO released House of the Dragon teaser trailer that brought fire, blood and incest. Which to be fair, is exactly what fans of Game of Thrones are looking for in this show. Set hundreds of years before Game of Thrones, this is still the Westeros you know, with the Seven Kingdoms, that Taragaryens, the Stark’s, Lannisters, and Baratheons. Dragons are even more numerous and therefore so is the destruction capable. Meanwhile we will get plenty of sex, murder, political plotting and some incest thrown in for good measure. Yep Thrones is back.
I must admit this trailer does have me hyped. I’m actually surprised, since the final season of Game of Thrones left me rather disappointed. The rushed nature of the ending just didn’t sit well with me. However this is a different story with an already outlined conclusion from creator George R.R. Martin. That’s something that couldn’t be said of Game of Thrones.
Rather than being neutered compared to Thrones, my bet is that the drama will be turned up to 11 in this show. There will be more sex, more death, more incest and more betrayal. Ultimately, when you think about it, Game of Thrones is just a soap opera in a fantasy setting and a huge budget. However, as the insane popularity of Game of Thrones attests, it works. Who could have ever imagined a fantasy show being the biggest show of all time? Now that success has paved the way for other successful fantasy shows such as The Witcher, The Wheel of Time, and presumably the upcoming Rings of Power.

Fantasy is a hugely underdeveloped genre on screens because they were simply too difficult to shoot in years gone past. The Lord of the Rings trilogy began that change. I think Game of Thrones then cemented the idea that high budget TV series is the best way to tell those stories.
House of the Dragon, like it’s predecessor will be very ‘grimdark’. In other words, this universe is a dark and adult one that deals with very mature themes. The Rings of Power will probably be more of a family show. The Wheel of Time (a major influence on Martin) falls somewhere in the middle, but skews closer to Thrones as it goes on. The Witcher is probably the darkest of the other material mentioned in comparison to the Thrones Universe.
